The Kids Club tackled the discussion of the Fourth Fool in our “Fool” Series, the Simple Fool. The Simple Fool believes what he hears without thinking about it first. In contrast, the Wise Man thinks about what he hears and decides if its true.
To explain the Simple fool example, we chose one student to be David, one student to be Saul, and the rest of the kids were David’s men. We talked about how Saul was angry and rebellious. Through Samuel God spoke to Saul “Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.” I Samuel 15:23b
To help the kids understand this we made a cave out of tables and put chairs around the edges. Then we had a student play the role of Saul and yell, “I want to get you David”. At that point our “David” and the entire class ran around the foyer down the hall and back into the class room and dove under the tables…um I mean cave. Then Saul came and fell asleep at the front of the cave. In Samuel 24:4a the Bible says, “[the men said] “This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish”. We talked about David’s men wanted him to kill Saul but David didn’t – he was not a SIMPLE FOOL (listening to others and doing what they said without thinking). The kids took turns being David and Saul and had a great time. They were all able to answer the questions after the story. :-)!
For our last illustration we showed the kids 2 carnations that had been sitting in colored water for about a week. Each carnation became the color of the water. We explained that whatever color the water was that is the color the carnation becomes. In the same way if you hang around with foolish people you can become foolish and if you hang around with wise people you can become wise.
The scripture for the week is Prov 13:20 – He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffer harm.
Great class! Awesome Kids.
